They shut down the cinemas too. Cinema Park. Ariana. Aryub. Projection rooms were ransacked and reels of films set to fire. Laila remembered all the times she and Tariq had sat in those theaters and watched hindi films, all those melodramatic tales of lovers seperated by some tragic turn of fate, one adrift in some faraway land, the other forced into marriage, the weeping, the singing in fields of merigolds, the longing for reunions. She remembered how Tariq would laugh at her for crying at those films. (p.251 Thousand Splendid suns)
This is ironic because now Laila is living the same life style as the girls in the movies she used to watch with her love, Tariq.

Hey again,
I had a quick question. Have you thought about maybe watching a movie that shows the Muslim culture? Not like a documentary or the film version of this book, but something that someone might watch in a country that is mostly Muslim? I was wondering if you would see a realistic representation of the feminine role in life or if the female characters would get any big attention/character development.
Movies are a great way to learna botu a culture if you know how to sift through for facts so if you're up for it, it migh tbe worth your while =D
Well I have seen Arab movies on the dish. and like usually the women gets abused in them or slaped by their husbands. But not all of them are like that. There are some that show the women with larger roles. This is a good idea though and I'm going to look some movies up to watch.
Thanks :)
