WHY are RULES always HARDER on WOMEN?!?!?

Our watan is now known as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. These are the laws that we will enforce and you will obey:
all citizens must pray five times a day. If it is prayer time and you are caught doing something other, you will be beaten.
All men will grow their beards. The correct length is at least one clenched fist beneath the chin. If you do not abide by this, you will be beaten.
All boys will wear turbans. Boys in grade one through six will wear black turbans, huigher grades will wear white. All boys will wear Islamic clothes. Shirt collars will be buttoned.
Singing is forbidden.
Dancing is forbidden.
playing cards, playing chess, gambling, and kite flying are forbidden.
Writing books, watching films, and painting pictures are forbidden.
If you keep parakeets, you will be beaten. Your birds will be killed.
If you steal, your hand will be cut off at the wrist. If you steal again, your foot wiil be cut off.
If you are not Muslim, do not worship where you can be seen by Muslims. If you do, you will be beaten and imprisoned. If you are caught trying to convert a Muslim to your faith, you will be executed.
Attention women:
You will stay inside your homes at all times. It is not proper for women to wander aimlessly about the streets. If you go outside, you must be accompanied by a
mahram, a male relative. If you are caught alone on the street, you will be beaten and sent home.
You will not, under any circumstance, show your face. You will cover with burqa when outside. If you do not, you will be severely beaten.
Cosmetics are forbidden.
Jewelry is forbidden.
You will not wear charming clothes.
You will not speak unless spoken to.
you will not make eye contact with men.
You will not laugh in public. If you do, you will be beaten.
You will not paint your nails. If you do, you will lose a finger.
Girls are forbidden from attending school. All schools for girls will be closed immediately.
Women are forbidden from working.
If you are found guilty of adultery, you will be stoned to death.
listen. listen well. obey.
Allah-u-akbar.(p.247-249 Thousand splendid suns)

Tell me what you think about this passage. How would you feel if you were under these cercumstances? Any questions? Ask. I'll explain my opinion once I find out your opinions.

Hey Farrah,

When I first looked at the title of this post I thought that it was going to show me more examples of women being put under stricter rule than men. However, when I finished reading, I realized that for the first time, I'm seeing some restrictions put down on the men.

" All men will grow their beards. The correct length is at least one clenched fist beneath the chin. If you do not abide by this, you will be beaten.

That part was what really caught my attention. I didn't expect men to have free reign over life or be completely free from control but I wasn't expecting them to be restricted so harshly. It's not as bad as how the women are treated, I know that (they don't have to cover up and all that) but it's still a demanding way of life for them. I wonder what a project with your theme but focusing on men would be like =P

Going on the the part of the passage that deals with the women in the Muslim culture, this emphasizes perfectly what your project is about.
"Attention women:

By this, it's very clear how women are forced to live in the Muslim world. The reprecussions of small actions--actions that are normal by our standards and standards of many other countries--are horrible. The fact that a woman will lose a finger if she paints her nails really caught my attention very quickly, as did the rule that cosmetics are not allowed.

This is the reader in me coming out, but the structure of this passage caught my eye. After the direct line stating "attention women" the sentences are short, powerful, and to the point. It reflects what I perceive as the dictatorship that the women of the Muslim culture face. The lines directed at the men are not as didactic until you get to the repition of forbidden. The repetition of forbidden, 'you will," "if you," and "listen" are all really powerful in the sense that it comes off as brain washing.

Nice choice of passage. I want to hear (or read lol) what you think about it.

Okay well first off to get some things clear. Then men don't mind what the goverment put on them because they already live like this. Their used to it basically.

"Singing is forbidden.
Dancing is forbidden.
playing cards, playing chess, gambling, and kite flying are forbidden.
Writing books, watching films, and painting pictures are forbidden.

This passage does not only stand for the men. It stands for everyone who lives in that country. The thing is most of these women will not be doing half of those things because they are already restricted from everything and can not leave their homes unless a man is with them.

Words can not even explain how I feel about these rules. Especially towards the women. Reading this passage it just makes me want to go to the countries that still live their lives under these rules. I just want to open everyones eyes, especially the women to rebel against these rules. What makes me mad the most is the fact that they say this is Islam. Most of the stuff on this is not Islam at all. First off its a sin to deform any part of your body or to deform someone elses. Hmmm...and they want to chop peoples hands off. Another thing is their not suppose to force a religion on people. Individuals should be aloud to make their own choices. If they don't want to be Muslim they don't have to. If the women don't wan't to wear the hijab they don't have to. Yes, God said that the women should wear the hijab but the thing is, its up the that individual to follow it or not to follow it. Yet, here they have no choice. These people disgust me because they give Muslims a bad name, make Islam seem like its something when its not. And since everyone sees and hears about this the most, they tend to start misunderstanding the relgion for something that is bad and not a good thing to practice.

Also, People then have a different judgement of Muslims before even getting to know them.
